Eco School/Eco Council

At Highclare School we gained our Bronze and Silver Eco-Schools awards in 2021. We work as a whole school from Pre-Prep to Upper Sixth to  break large, global issues like climate change into more manageable and directed themes that prompt young people to consider environmental changes that they can make in their school and everyday lives.

Following a school environmental review we choose three topics to work on to make our school more environmentally friendly.

In 2022-23 we recreated the kitchen garden at HPW and grew so many courgettes Lynette did not know what to do with them!

This year our main project has been to set up a kitchen garden at HPP and to continue our great work at HPW. Eco Council are currently growing a range of vegetables, fruits and herbs including: Pak choi, dwarf beans, tomatoes, courgettes, carrots, sunflowers, sweetpeas, rosemary, thyme, mint (and wildflower seed at home). We home you will all enjoy eating them when they grow!

In April 2024, Eco Council took part in a competition to design a sustainable school. Taking inspiration from the sustainability initiatives that they are using at the Paris Olympics, we discussed how important it is to design our new school as sustainable as possible. We looked at rainbow coloured solar panels,  a school small holding, mindfulness gardens, roof top garden and how we could make our buildings accessible for all. As part of our research we looked at how important bees are and how we could incorporate bee hives into our school plan (see the link below for more information).
